Centrinian Launches the #TOE Scavenger Hunt for London
Secondary School Students

London, UK, April 14, 2016 – With just over four weeks to go before the entry deadline, there is still enough time for students to unleash their imagination and discover the mystery surrounding Talisman Of El, book one in the T.O.E. trilogy, a young adult fantasy series by disabled UK writer Alecia Stone.

Centrinian, together with CBY Book Club, has launched the #TOE Scavenger Hunt throughout numerous schools across London. The competition challenges students with a quiz that measures their knowledge of Talisman Of El in a bid to win one of six amazing prize bundles that includes but is not limited to a Segway and a PS4.

“Encouraging teenagers to read these days is quite a challenging feat even with an incentive such as a competition, so the fundamental focus here has to be the product,” said Sheldon Stone, Publisher and Chief Executive Officer of Centrinian Publishing Ltd, “and we believe we have just the thing to spark a love for reading in youths.”

TOE School Competition - A4HOW TO ENTER

Entries must be submitted via the #TOE Scavenger Hunt app at the following Facebook website: https://www.facebook.com/TalismanOfEl.

Any entries not complying with the rules will be discounted.

Closing date for the entry form is May 15, 2016. The competition commences on May 16 and ends on May 20, 2016.

Talisman Of El Excerpt

‘Hey.’ Charlie chased after him.

‘Charlie,’ Derkein called. ‘Charlie, get back here.’

Charlie didn’t stop. With the burning stick still in his hand, he raced through the forest after the boy. ‘Stop!’ he yelled. ‘I just want my bag.’ The boy was a good thirty feet ahead of him. What do they feed this kid?

‘Charlie,’ he heard Derkein call. It wasn’t until a loud cry reached him that he stopped.

It was Alex.

He turned round but saw no sign of the others. Panicked, he looked back at the boy, who had also stopped, and then he turned and ran back the way he had come.

It didn’t take him long to spot Derkein. When he got closer, he saw Richmond, who was now on his feet, Alex’s burning stick slowly fading on the ground beside him. But where was Alex?

Seeing Derkein and Richmond glancing up into a tree, he followed their gaze and spotted Alex trapped in a rope net.

‘It could be worse,’ Richmond said. Charlie and Derkein glanced at him. ‘What, it could.’

Derkein’s gaze shifted to Charlie, and the lines on his forehead smoothed out, his expression stern. ‘Didn’t we just have a conversation about you running off?’

‘I know,’ Charlie said, ‘but I was trying to get my bag back.’ Derkein looked confused. ‘It’s not just going to fall out of the sky.’

‘What? No, that kid –’

‘Ah, hello,’ Alex said hotly. ‘Girl in a rope here. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m thinking whoever set this trap might come back.’

Charlie looked up at her, her body bent in an uncomfortable sitting position with her legs reaching high above her head, and a faint smile crept onto his face. ‘Hang in there, Alex,’ he called up to her.

‘You just wait till I get down, Charlie Theodore Blake,’ she threatened.

Richmond snickered. ‘Your middle name’s Theodore?’

Charlie looked at him, his smile fading. ‘Shut up.’

Derkein cleared his throat to refocus their attention. ‘How are we going to get her down, boys?’ he asked.

Charlie glanced back up at the tree. The distance between Alex and the ground was at least twelve feet, twice Derkein’s height. To get her down, Derkein would have to hoist Charlie onto his shoulder, and then some.

As Derkein pondered a strategy, Charlie’s focus shifted to the thudding sound he heard coming towards them. Before he even had time to panic, the sound died almost as soon as it had begun.

He turned round and froze, his heart thrumming in his ears as he stared at the line of people armed with shiny blades and arrows pointed at his head.

Blackout Excerpt

‘Hey, Becks,’ Charlie whispered to Rebecca just as Group B moved around the tree to inspect the other side.

Rebecca stopped and turned to him. ‘What?’

Charlie looked back at Alex and Josh, who had just grabbed Alex’s arm to stop her from walking off. ‘Does that seem odd to you?’ When Rebecca didn’t respond, he glanced sideways at her and saw her gawking at him with an undesirable look on her face.

‘I should care because?’ she responded.

‘Would it kill you to be nice to me for one minute?’

‘Anything’s possible.’

Charlie stared her down.

Rebecca rolled her eyes and glanced in Alex and Josh’s direction. ‘They’re talking, so what?’

‘So what could they possibly have to say to each other? They can’t stand to be in each other’s presence for longer than ten seconds, so it makes you wonder.’

‘Not really. I could care less. Maybe they’re trying to get your attention.’

Charlie paused. ‘Why would they need my attention?’

‘Why don’t you ask them and not me?’

Because I need to prove to her that I can do this. Charlie watched as Alex walked away from Josh, who remained where he was, staring after her. ‘She probably thinks I’m weak, but I am going to break the veil.’ Another realisation hit him. ‘Maybe there is no veil. Maybe she just wants me to think there is –’

‘Are you on something?’ Charlie looked at Rebecca and saw her watching him with a furrowed brow. ‘You’ve been acting really weird all day, and now you’re talking about some veil thing that I – I just – I actually don’t know what you’re talking about.’

Charlie stared at her in shock. He hadn’t realised he had spoken aloud.

Rebecca narrowed her eyes at him. ‘You’re trying to distract me, aren’t you?’ She nodded to herself. ‘You’re ticked off that I answered your question –’

Charlie tuned her out. Rebecca had given him an idea. I need to draw her out. He glanced around the surroundings. He could make out Alex and the rest of Group A some distance away, but Group C weren’t within his vicinity. All he needed was a little distraction. He looked back at Rebecca, who was still yapping away.

‘Becks,’ Charlie said, cutting her sentence short, ‘I’m not trying to score points here, so chill.’ He patted her shoulder and gave her a smile. Rebecca stared at him as if he’d lost his mind, and then she turned round and walked off to rejoin the group.

Charlie’s smile faded, and he took a deep breath. He felt a tingling sensation crawling up his arms as the heat within him took its course. The voices around him were the first to fade, and then it was complete silence. The earth drummed under his feet. The wind rose; a few dead leaves latched onto him as they moved across the ground.

His fellow students and teachers stopped what they were doing. He had their full attention. He felt a vein twitch in his neck as the heat inside him rose to his head. Papers whisked in the air, dancing with the wind. It all seemed like a performance of some sort, a theatrical show. He watched the students grabbing for their papers in a frenzy as they attempted to retrieve their data. Only six individuals remained where they were, astounded by the event taking place. Only one had eyes for him: Alex.

Her eyes were wide with shock.

Charlie shot her a knowing smile.

And then the mist engulfed her.

Excerpt from Blackout:

Charlie’s eyes shifted back and forth between Derkein and the knife. Derkein had a look in his eyes he didn’t recognise. This wasn’t the man he had moved in with. He wasn’t the man who was soon to become his adoptive father. This was an impostor.

‘My father always said everything happened for a reason,’ Derkein said, ‘but he never met you. What good is immortality if I’m stuck in one place?’ He stopped and dropped his arm by his side, the knife slipping out of his grasp and landing with a clunking noise on the marble floor.

Charlie stopped, leaving a few inches between him and Derkein, who was standing with a guarded stance. Charlie couldn’t help but wonder who was more afraid of whom.

‘You’ve left me to rot in this god forsaken world for the rest of my life, so forgive me if I seem a tad ungrateful,’ Derkein went on in a flat tone. His blank expression left no room for interpretation. ‘If I have to rot in hell, I don’t see why I should have to suffer alone.’

Charlie didn’t see it coming. Derkein lunged at him, grabbed him by the arms, and thrust him backwards. Charlie waited for the collision of his back with the conservatory door, but the impact didn’t occur. Instead, he found himself falling and landing hard on his back in darkness. The only source of light came from the kitchen ahead of him where Derkein was standing.

‘Why do you look so surprised?’ Derkein asked. ‘What did you expect was going to happen when you resurrected me, or did I not deserve the common courtesy of a conscious thought? I’m not like you. I’m not like them. Tell me, Charlie. What am I, exactly?’

Charlie rose up into a sitting position. He didn’t have the answers Derkein was seeking. ‘I’m sorry.’ The words barely escaped his mouth.

‘Yeah. Me too.’ In the blink of an eye, Derkein and the kitchen vanished, leaving Charlie in complete darkness. He sat in the empty silence, waiting. It wasn’t until he heard his rapid breathing that he realised panic had overcome him. Charlie scampered to his feet and charged ahead of him, ramming into the hard, rough texture of a brick wall.

‘Derkein!’ he yelled, pounding the wall with his fists. ‘Derkein, please –’

‘Sol.’

Charlie felt a crawling sensation move down his spine as a shrill voice echoed around him. With his palms braced against the wall, he remained still as the voice slowly faded. He held his breath as silence invaded the space once again. When the voice didn’t return, he made a move to the right, running his hand over the wall as he searched for the door.

Within seconds, he felt a tingle of cold air on the back of his neck that made him jump, and he released his breath. He spun around, shifting his head left and right, but his eyes couldn’t penetrate the darkness that surrounded him.

He reached up towards his neck and froze. The rhythm of his heart accelerated as he moved his hand over his chest in search of the familiar touch of the two silver rings he had become so accustomed to over the past five years, but the chain wasn’t around his neck. Although he couldn’t see anything, he suddenly felt as though the darkness was closing in on him, compressing his lungs as if attempting to stifle him.

A spotlight appeared a few feet in front of him, and his heart stopped. He gulped down the lump forming in his throat as he stared at the figure submerged in the light, dangling about two feet off the ground.
